It's that time of year again when our senior students are about to graduate. In fact, next Monday, May 7th, will be the very last class day for
the current senior group. They are returning to school following their 4 week 'stage'......and then, they're off!
And they are, in the most part, seeking employment - jobs in which to use their newly developed skills, practise their theory - experiment
with 'grand design'.
I, as always, wish them the very best.....especially this current class. A smaller group of only 12 students, of which 10 were from China, one from south Korea and one from Moldavia. They were great.....Minjee (Kim), South Korea, was an enthusiastic, bright, perky student with a great passion for design.
As was Elena (Hromova)......greatly disciplined, hugely enthusiastic. Mark, in his own quiet gentle way hides a great creative talent.....Lucy, effervescent, luminous......silly, but oh so sweet, is moving on to Concordia University to further pursue studies in Digital Design. Wenqi - well, Wenqi Italiano...so called because in being from China his forbears must have had some involvement with Marco Polo for he has all the italian hand gestures down pat!
Di and Kitty, husband and wife, will be successful I'm sure of it.....and Zilun - well, what can I say? She always sparkled, always with a gracious and
warm smile.....her sidekick Aimé the same.....two peas in a pod. What a great group! David/Nana, joined at the hip....David the reluctant design student, in class probably only because that's where Nana was every day. And Swan - smoulderingly quiet Swan.....she'll find her way - her stubbornness will assure that.
I will, miss them. In my 25+ year teaching career I have been oh-so-lucky to establish and then maintain, bonds of friendship and fellowship.
Previous students in Amman, Hong Kong, Milan, Beirut - many other places, keep in touch with me.....some for over 20 years now.
It is that - that connection, that is teaching's reward......
So, in seeking work I have very simple advice.....do NOT be a prima donna.....as talented as you are, as much faith as I have in you, you know nothing, yet. Nothing that brings immediate value to an employer. So, in your search, your quest, take a n y t h i n g - any job that is design related....just to start, somewhere.
When you need my guidance, my support - just ask. If you need a reference, just ask......if you miss me, well - don't ask - tell me....
Bonne chance!
